DAPI (diamidino-2-phenylindole) is a widely used blue fluorescent nuclear and chromosome counterstain. It fluoresces brightly upon selectively binding to AT-rich regions in double-stranded DNA. Its strong DNA selectivity and high cell membrane permeability allow efficient nuclear staining with minimal cytoplasmic background.
